Enlarging
The Sprouts were working on a large unit studying immigration in social studies. We took that opportunity to practice our enlarging skills (an excellent drawing skill helping students see line) and enlarged the Statue of Liberty, adding the maps of the countries they were studying. We extended this with some self-portrait enlarging as well! See a few of the finished ones below.
Biomes
The Sprouts were studying Biomes in science, and we went to work on constructing a biome for their chosen animal. Check these out!
Open Studio for Sprouts
Right before February vacation the Sprouts had a few open studio session in which they could work on anything they wanted in the art room. Here are some of our results!
Some Final Printmaking
Below are our last collections of printmaking from the Sprouts.
Sprouts 1 and 2: Printmaking
For the last few weeks, the Sprouts have been working through four types of printmaking: incised, stamps, collagraphs, and monoprints.
Sprouts 2: Collaged Map of New Hampshire
Sprouts 1: Collaged Map of New Hampshire
After a study of the history and geography of New Hampshire, students completed a collage of the state of New Hampshire, complete with landmarks including cities, mountains, rivers and lakes.
Sprouts 1: Construction Studio Exploration
The Sprouts have moved into construction and are experimenting with how different materials can be attached to create a final sculpture.

Sprouts and Clay
The Sprouts 1 and 2 classes have been moving through the studios and have landed in the clay area for a few sessions while we build our clay bowls for the "Fill Your Cup" fundraiser!
Sketchbooks and Exploring Studios with the Sprouts
The Sprouts have started this year with brand new sketchbooks! We will be trying to draw for the first 5-10 minutes of each class to move our brain from left to right and to establish our environment for thinking and creating. Check out their sketchbook covers and a few of them exploring the Drawing, Painting, and Collage studios below!

2012-2013 End of Year Aboriginal Work
Mrs. Cunha and I collaborated with the students on a beautiful Aboriginal art mural. The students researched Aboriginal life and art in class then came to the art room to first practice their dot painting technique, choose an animal to represent their ancestry, create and paint their animal, then attach it to the larger mural and make visual connections between each of them using Aboriginal symbols. I will have a few more pics coming of this final piece!
Construction and the finish to collage
Below you will find out open studio construction work an our final fairy tale collages!
Collage
The Sprouts have jumped into collage in April. We always start with some basic principles and vocabulary building using basic shape manipulation. We are in the middle of our Fairy Tale collages that will be shown at the Kelly Library in May!
Painting
Check out the results of our final painting project - figures painted with color and design to match an emotion. Click on each image to see clearly!
Painting
The Sprouts have been busy finishing up their painting unit which focused primarily on emotive color - the use of color to convey ideas and feelings. The final project shown below is an outline of their figure which is then painting according to an emotion they were assigned.
Painting
The Sprouts have jumped right into painting and are doing such a great job mixing and creating their own colors and ideas. All of our mood landscapes were made using only red, yellow, blue and white - all other colors you see have been mixed by the students!

Clay Figures
Our final project in clay - the human figure in action!
Clay
The Sprouts created clay masks. They first learned how to build an armature that would help to shape the clay as a human face. They then designed their mask and built it according to design. Lastly they reflected on it in their artist statements.
Clay Unit
Our first coil pots are complete! Inspired by Juan Quezada, Mexican potter.
Clay Unit
We have begun working with clay!! The Sprouts could not be happier. We are in the process of learning about and experimenting with this material!
Drawing Unit - Wrap up!
The sprouts are in the very beginning of their clay unit, but we have no finished work just yet. Below are the images of our final drawings working with pattern and figures.
Drawing Unit
We are in the final stretch of our drawing unit with the Sprouts. We have created our own figures in action and developed a background setting for them. We have also begun some texture drawing exercises which will be used in our final drawing project.
Drawing Unit
We have been busy here in the art room moving from observational drawing of objects to the figure. Students have been learning to observe and record the body through gestural drawings - quick drawings that focus on the form and shape of the figure rather than the contour line. The first set of images below are some examples of our first attempts and the latter are the student's efforts to create their own simple scene incorporating one or more figures from memory.
Drawing Unit
Completed leaf drawings below!
Drawing Unit (Figure focus)
The Sprouts are in the beginning phases of their drawing unit. This unit begins with a review of line types, how to see lines, basic line drawings, and will move into the figure. The students are studying maps and the body in class, so the activities we pursue in art will be integrated in those areas. See the photos below to follow our progress!
The Cardboard Project
Every student at the Birches began their year with a mixed media project that reflected something personal about them. We felt it important for the students to make their mark on the school early. To do this, we used the material that most of our school arrived in...cardboard! We began with a cardboard base and added construction pieces to represent the interests of each student. They then added paint, collage and drawing to finish off their personal project. It was an excellent introduction to the making of art and allowed the students to begin taking ownership of their school!
