Final Printmaking
The Saplings are expert printmakers!
They have tackled linocut, incising, collagraphs and monoprints. Their final linocuts were a representative symbol of themselves, integrating with their personal narrative work in Language Arts.

Printkmaking with the Saplings
The Saplings have been busy experimenting with incised block prints, collagraphs and monoprints. Here are some of the results!
Completed Masks
The masks are finally complete! What a great job the kids did and what a great process from start to finish. See below!
Saplings 1 and 2: Greek Mask Project
Students have been working on plaster masks that will represent their choice of a Greek character or god/goddess. Here are some photos of them in action!
Saplings 1 and 2: Hieroglyphics Studio Project
Saplings 1: Clay and Construction Studio Exploration
Cave Painting Replication
Saplings 1 and 2 have been studying early evidence of man and archeology. Cave paintings as old as 17000 B.C. have been part of their study. As an arts integration project, we studied the cave of Lascaux in France, and tried our best to replicate some of the symbols and animals represented in that cave. The students used a variety of materials to mimic the cave wall and paintings on it. Scroll down to see our finished products!
Sketchbooks and Exploring Studios with the Saplings
The Saplings have started this year with brand new sketchbooks! We will be trying to draw for the first 5-10 minutes of each class to move our brain from left to right and to establish our environment for thinking and creating. Check out their sketchbook covers and a few of them exploring the Drawing, Painting, and Collage studios below!

Construction - Roller Coasters!
The Saplings have completed their coasters! They were shown at Canobie on the weekends of May 11-12 and 17-19. They will be available for viewing at the Art Show on June 6!
Clay Masks
The Saplings have completed their clay unit with a final clay mask. The results are awesome!
Clay
The Saplings continue in clay with the basic coil pot. They have learned how to score and slip, incise and stamp into the clay as well. The pots below reveal their first attempts.
Clay
The Saplings started their clay unit with some bone-making to contribute to the One Million Bones project. I do not have the finished products back just yet as they had to be sent out for firing in a kiln. Check back!
Drawing - Grid Enlargement
The Saplings' first work with enlarging a drawing using a grid was a lot of fun! We used pictures of Ms. Morris and Ms. McArdle to grid. Each student was responsible for 2 squares on each drawing. This project outlined the importance of drawing in relation to the grid lines and proportion.
Drawing - Masking Techniques
The Saplings created their birch trees using a masking process with masking tape and watercolor. They also drew the lines and shadows with pen and ink.
Drawing Unit
The Saplings have been very busy since our December break! Just prior to the break all of the Birches students worked on the snowflake project for the Sandy Hook Elementary students. The Saplings had the most contribution to this as they were finished with their collage unit. See some of our pictures below. We have also jumped right into our drawing unit, beginning with a variety of drawing activities such as contour drawing, blind contour, upside down drawing, etc. Our first project was integrated with their science unit on the moon and observation journals. Our piece is created using a masking technique with chalk pastel.
Collage Unit - wrap up!
The Saplings have already begun their drawing unit and are working in their sketchbooks on observational drawing. Our final collage work is displayed below and was focused on a "place" that they connect with.
Collage Unit
We are wrapping up our collage unit with the Saplings. Our most recent work was using texture as the centerpiece of a collage. The students were given a tactile texture piece and a visual texture/pattern piece. They had do use both pieces in a way that made sense in their work. The results are below!
Collage Unit
Our next collages are complete! As a class we read through "Picture This: How Pictures Work" by Molly Bang. In this book, the well-known author and illustrator goes through her step by step process of making simple collage art considering color, composition, shape, mood, etc. The students then took this new knowledge and applied it to their own work. They were asked to choose a fairy tale to illustrate using simple collage. See if you can tell what fairy tale they are representing!
Collage Unit
We are in the middle of our collage unit, currently working on Fairy Tale representations and moving forward to tactile and visual textures in collage. Some activities are shown below!
Collage Unit
The Saplings have begun their collage unit. They are going to be working with a theme of "paper" in the classroom, and so to extend and integrate their learning in the art room we will be studying paper collage. We started the unit with an introduction to basic composition and shape experimentation, along with learning how to properly glue. Our next piece will be a topic of their choosing utilizing construction paper only. This will limit their thinking to color and shape. Later in the unit we will add elements of texture, pattern, and mood. The pictures below will provide a window into our progress!
The Cardboard Project
Every student at the Birches began their year with a mixed media project that reflected something personal about them. We felt it important for the students to make their mark on the school early. To do this, we used the material that most of our school arrived in...cardboard! We began with a cardboard base and added construction pieces to represent the interests of each student. They then added paint, collage and drawing to finish off their personal project. It was an excellent introduction to the making of art and allowed the students to begin taking ownership of their school!
